I bought Level Up Your Life by the recommendation of the previous book I read, The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath.
I saved the book on my Amazon wishlist and bought it immediately the day after because I love to play games, I am sort of a nerd and I frequent Steve’s website Nerdfitness.com a few times before. In short, this book was a no-brainer to me.
I know I have to read it!
At the time of writing this review, I am about 50% done with the book. This review will be updated once more when I’m 100% done.
Level Up Your Life Summary
Life is a game full of quests and interesting adventures. Think about it… anything that you wish to accomplish can be turned into a game. From learning a new language, playing a new instrument, setting up a date, building a website etc.
It doesn’t have to be “I want to learn German,” “I want to make millions.” How boring is that. Come on, who doesn’t want to have an additional million dollar in their bank account, have the ability to speak 10 different languages, or have a date with their crush?
The problem is… merely wanting (or dreaming) is easy but putting up the work is hard.
The biggest takeaway for me is that Steve breaks it down to different stages and making what I want to achieve interesting yet extremely achievable.
For instance, I want to have 20,000 daily traffic to the project I am working on Humble and Rich Boutique and make a monthly income of US$100,000.
Instead of leaving it at that which usually turns out to be just a pipe dream, Steve recommended that I break it down to different levels and stages to make achieving my goals fun (yes, like a game).
If I were to start the project from the beginning, it would look something like this:
- Level 1: Set up the Sub-domain, install HTTPS, protect the site using firewall and choose a theme
- Level 2: Interview and hire suitable writers to be part of the start-up team
- Level 3: Have 20 unique live articles on the website
You get the idea! In short, break your goals down to achievable levels and enjoy the process of achieving something that is meaningful to you.
This is the nerd version of the popular Chinese saying “A thousand miles begin with a single step.”
In games, you don’t go slaying dragons when you can’t even kill a freaking spider. You will get your ass kick.
Same goes in real life.
If you cannot even speak one proper sentence in French and you try to carry out an entire conversation with a French lady because you find her attractive or whatnot, you will get your ass kick!
However, when you kill enough spiders, you will eventually level up and then you go on to kill other stronger creatures. Do this long enough and one day slaying dragons will be like killing annoying mosquitos.
And most important of all, you will find killing spiders, rabbits very satisfying. Who doesn’t like to level up regardless of game or in real life?
Kill enough spiders and you will level up. Kill enough rabbits and you will level up again. You know you are improving and getting stronger day by day and that is supremely satisfying.
For those who have played games before, you know exactly what I mean. You will get addicted to this kind of leveling. Please do not worry about addiction because this is exactly the kind of addiction you want to have in your life – Leveling Up Your Life one day at a time!
